"Sometimes you need a bang!" That was Matt Salter's message at the end of what can only be described as a poor afternoon at The Rec against a rampant Redruth.
Having conceded less than 70 points over the first 5 games and scored over 200; Clifton shipped 49 points and scored just 12 in one game. Despite the setback, the coaching staff are determined to ensure that they mark it with the squad, have an honest look at themselves and then swiftly move on.
"We can't dwell on it. You don't have time in this league. What we have done is mark it, accept where we were poor, and then addressed it on Tuesday both in our session and in the review and your focus quickly switches to Saturday. We have a big opportunity over the next 2 weekends at home, starting with OA's. They have always been a dynamic, athletic side but will pose a similar problem as last week. They pushed Redruth all the way - the message this week is about our fundamentals. We are on a journey with a new squad and we are shaping our identity; bit our basic skill levels were not good enough last week and they will need to be on point Saturday. "
Salter will be without both Regan Herbert & Joe Owen as they both picked up knocks against Redruth. Alex Howman is also still unavailable but the side are boosted by the return to fitness of Kei Bergh, Henry Harper and Zak Hamid. Jac Lloyd and Tomos Gwilliam are in contention and Bentley Halpin came through his first 80 minutes last week.
Old Albanians suffered what was perceived as a shock loss to Rochford last week and will be determined to make up ground. Teams in the league are beginning to find their feet and whilst there is no panic, Salter is keen that the side get back on the horse.
"We are a good side in a good place who got well beaten by the best team in the league last week. We are learning more about ourselves, as coaches and as players, but we know where we are strong and we know when we get it right, we are right up there. It's early days but there are really encouraging signs. The boys have reacted well this week -we had a good hit-out on Tuesday and we are looking forward to heading into OA's at home this weekend."
