Having enjoyed our first taste of cup rugby this season and some strong
wins in earlier rounds followed by a tough semi final, the team were rightly
in positive mood prior to taking on Oldfield in the final at Keynsham RFC
in front of a sizeable set of supporters on a glorious Mothering Sunday.
Our strength over the last few years has been running rugby and avoiding
getting caught up in an arm wrestle with the opposition. The Clifton boys
were challenged by the coaches to trust the systems that have been put in
place all season and stick to the game plan, ensuring quick ball from the
forwards and hard running to give our back three players the chance to
run in to space.
To say the boys executed the plan perfectly is an understatement.
Every single player in the squad excelled and did much more than was
asked of one individual to make the first half the best team performance
we have seen from this Clifton team and blow our opponents away. Five
tries were scored in the first half coming from lovely running rugby and
forwards and backs combining after putting in the hard yards. We went in
to the break with a commanding 31-5 lead.
For any team it is difficult to maintain that level of momentum and to
Oldfield’s credit they worked hard and put up a solid defensive effort and
managed to contain Clifton to three more tries in the second half. Oldfield
had no answer to the relentless wave of attacks from Clifton as well as our
gritty defence and couldn’t manufacture any further scores.
The final score ended 48-5 and Clifton crowned U14 BJC Champions
2023.
An amazing achievement from the whole squad, celebrated in style and a
lovely gift for all the Mothers that came along to support!!
