The scoreline which saw Luctonians toppled off the league’s leadership position does not really do impressive Clifton full justice as for much of this encounter they dominated possession and territory and showed a superior will to win this game.
Clifton were unable to capitalise on the many chances they created on a heavy pitch. If they had done so a try bonus point would have added to their winning points. It was only in the early stages of the second half that table-topping Luctonians showed any real threat.
The early pressure came from Clifton with Luctonians yielding a high penalty count which eventually led to a yellow card. Something had to give, and it was when a lofted cross field kick from Mitch Spencer, the Rugby Paper’s star man, was well fielded by winger Zak Hamid who dived over the line with Luke Cozens converting (0-7).
Clifton led by those seven points at half time with the lead only being dented by a Luctonians penalty when they did apply some pressure after the interval (3-7). The fine performance by the Clifton pack, with Clifton Sausage Man of the Match Freddie Myatt prominent, did well to contain their opponents.
On his return to Clifton colours, Kofi Cripps, recently awarded a contract with the Bears, came off the bench to add his influence with a barging run. However, a try by the Herefordshire men gave them a one-point lead (8-7).
In the final quarter the momentum returned to the visitors, with Clifton battering the try line and looking certain to score with Luctonians wobbling. A knock on denied them a try before Lucs illegally stopped a Clifton attack. Cozens duly despatched the resulting penalty to put his team back in front and ultimately secure the victory (8-10).
Talking to his players on the pitch after the final whistle a satisfied Cozens declared,”I enjoyed that, and it was obvious we deserved to win but we must keep this form continuing into next week. A job well done!”
The Clifton victory sees local cross city rivals Dings Crusaders move into the promotion slot and perhaps the unusual occurrence of their loyal fans toasting a Clifton victory!
The next fixture of the four remaining this season is at home on Saturday 23rd March at Station Road. Kick off will be at 2:30pm when Clifton host Bournville RFC, who will be looking to build on their high scoring victory over Camborne yesterday.
